Authentic Artisan Garlic Naan

A soft and fluffy garlic naan perfect for scooping up curries or enjoying on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry or instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil, plus 2 tablespoons extra for cooking
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it turns bubbly.
  2. Stir in the warm milk, yogurt, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, and minced garlic. Add flour, baking powder, and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 3-5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Lightly oil a clean bowl, place the dough inside, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces and roll each piece into an oval shape. Heat a greased skillet over medium-high heat. Place a naan piece in the skillet, cook until bubbly, then flip and cook until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  6. In a small bowl, mix melted butter, minced garlic, and chopped herbs. Brush over the warm naan breads before serving.

Notes

Make sure your water is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast. Keep the naan warm in a towel after cooking to ensure they stay soft.
