Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls with Apples

Delicious warm cinnamon rolls with a unique sourdough twist and sweet apple filling, perfect for brunch or an afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups chopped apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, milk, sugar, and melted butter. Stir until well mixed.
  2. Add the eggs and mix well.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  5. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface.
  7. Spread with softened butter, sprinkle with cinnamon, sugar, and top with chopped apples.
  8. Roll the dough tightly, cut into even pieces, and place in a greased baking pan.
  9. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  10. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

For best flavor, use fresh ingredients, especially the apples. Consider using parchment paper in your baking pan to avoid sticking. A sharp knife or dental floss works wonders for cutting the rolls without squishing them.
